CRITICAL QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR KITCHEN RENOVATION CONTRACTOR

Choosing a good kitchen renovation contractor is one important part of your renovation process. But, how do you know for sure that the contractor you chose is the best for your project?

You simply need to connect with your contractor. And, the best way to do so is by asking your contractor critical questions relating to your project.

We therefore compiled these critical questions that your contractor needs to answer to ensure successful renovation.

1. Can You Provide Your License and Certificate of Insurance?

Demand for a proof of license from your potential contractors. At least, every trustworthy contractor should have a license. If you don’t feel satisfied with what he provided, you can make inquiries from the local authority to be sure. They’ll even give you more details concerning your contractor. Do not forget to ask for insurance certificate which would indicate that your project is covered by insurance.

2. Would You Be Working with an Architect?

An Architect should be the one to draft the design and draw our proposal and contract papers. Ask your contractor for all these things. It is the kitchen design drawn by an Architect that would be followed during your kitchen renovation. This is the very first thing you have to secure. Then a detailed proposal containing the materials and labor with their cost, the permits required and who will obtain them, etc. All the works to be done including inspection should be in this proposal. Agreements for change orders, penalties in case of defaulting, and holding back 10% until final approval should also come with this.

3. Can You Provide a List of Your Subcontractors?

Your renovation contractor won’t do the job by himself. Therefore, he’ll work with cabinetmakers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters, etc. Ask him for a list of these people. Make sure that the compensation laws of workers and insurance for the disabled cover them.

4. Do You Have Additional Suggestion to the Kitchen Design?

You don’t want a contractor who is not creative enough. Good contractors want their work to stand out therefore would help you choose materials. They would be the ones purchasing your appliances, gadgets, and finishing materials. It is possible that they may ask you to come along, feel free to go if you have the chance.

5. Do You Have Discount on Shopping?

Shops offer discount sales for reliable contractors since they purchase in bulk. Just ask him as this could help your budget, however, it is mostly of goodwill that any contractor will let you in on this discount. The most they could do is to help you deliver your purchased goods free of charge.

6. When Should I Check Up on the Progress of the Renovation?

While this decision lies mostly on you, still ask your contractor to hear his suggestion. His suggestion would usually be to visit often as convenient on your side. On a recommendation, try to check on the work progress at least once a week. More is better.

7. What is the Best Way to Communicate?

You need to establish a convenient communication channel with your contractor. Reaching him should be easy for you and you need to get a reply as quickly as possible. Find out if you contractor prefers phone call, text message, or email.
